Lexington Independent Homeschool is excited to announce our NEW LOCATION

 Spring 2020 Classes

1st Hour

Preschool Ballet/Tap

Ages: 3-5

Description: Get ready for a fun hour of dance with Miss Melanie! 40 minutes of ballet/jazz and 20 minutes of tap including terms and movement, stretching, and learning many short fun dances! We will learn the importance of following directions, waiting our turn, team work and encouraging our friends. We will also incorporate dance, shapes, colors, letters, numbers and more. Students will get to bring special items from home to use in class, we will make fun props to use during class and I will also bring props for them to  use as well. We will have a performance at the end of the semester in May.

Items needed for class: we will use these for classes and for our final performance, I will also provide special props and costume pieces for the final performance.

Ballet shoes -any color

Tap shoes- any color

Optional for class but will need for performance:

Black leotard and pink ballet tights (for girl)

Black leggings or shorts and a white or grey t-shirt (for boy)

Melanie is a mom of three- Isaac, Eric and Lauren- and loves to dance and share her love of dance with others. She danced through most of her childhood, teen and young adult years. She has also taught dance to children and youth of all ages for many years.

Description: Join us for a relaxed embroidery class to learn a neat counted thread and drawn thread work technique! We will first work on hardanger basics and then move on to individual projects. Materials will be provided.

Students will begin with the basics of hand sewing progressing through projects at their own pace. Many beginners will be ready to begin machine sewing at the end of their first semester. Some students will need to spend more or less time at the beginner level before moving on to machine sewing.

Intermediate $65, plus supplies:

Intermediate students will learn the ins and outs of their machine through a series of projects. The project instructions will be provided through the class. Intermediate students must be competent with the with the beginner skills. Many students will stay at the Intermediate level for several semesters. Students at the Intermediate level  may just be starting out with a machine, be able to do projects independently, be beginning the process of learning to follow patterns, or following patterns independently. All will progress at their own pace.

Advanced/Independent study $50, plus supplies:

Advanced students will be able to complete  all the requirements of beginner and intermediate levels independently. They will be learning and experimenting with advanced pattern and sewing techniques. Students will work relatively independently and use the teacher as a resource person. Many of the tools required for the advanced techniques will be provided for use in the class. Students can then decide if they would like to purchase tools themselves.

Description: Theater is a great way for kids to build confidence and community while having fun! We will cover acting games, team building activities, and important acting skills. We will also get to study what it takes to be part of crew and even how to help with sets, props and costumes. This is a foundational theater and audition skills class that WILL NOT have a performance at the end. Please come join us as we explore drama!

Mya is a college freshman who has taught at LIH before and is glad to be back. She has a passion for sharing her love of theater with children and teens. She looks forward to this year at LIH.

**Please note** Mya would like to offer this class to any of her students that were part of her Fall 2019 class free of charge. These students would be allowed to take Drama 1 and 2 during the same semester.

Description: This class is best for ages 2-5. This class will teach children basic preschool skills like colors, shapes, counting, sorting, following directions, taking turns, and beginning letter recognition. We will use fine motor activities, cooperative play and circle time each day. Children in class will use scissors, glue, paints, sensory materials and other media of art. We may get a little messy at times. Messy is fun! We will read a book together every class and sing and dance to preschool learning songs that incorporate our book and activity for the day.

Tracy Phillips is a mom of four, ranging in ages from 11 to 24. She has a degree in early childhood education and psychology. She is a cat lover and modern-day hippie. Andrea Davis is a community living support provider and also a Licensed massage therapist. She has three kids in the age ranges of 4 to 12. She is a music lover and has a bit of wander lust. Together they have over 30 years of early childcare experience.

Cooking 4 Littles

Description: Cooking for littles is a class offered for ages 3+. This class is great hands on way to for our little ones to experience different foods and fun recipes. As well as kitchen safety. This class will get messy so come ready to create!

Description: Poetry 102- Mid to High school level (this is an entry level course, 101 is not a prerequisite, but will include more time writing poetry than 101)

My goal is to foster a love of words and expression (both the students’ own words and the words of others) in a creative, supportive environment. This class will include exposure to a wide variety of poetry topics and forms and dabble in attempting to pen some of our own poems in a non-threatening manner. We will decide as a class how to share our work when appropriate (ie, open mic, a class published book, a writers workshop).

This age group will focus on experiencing poetry as well as writing poetry while refining the basics of poetry techniques and forms.

I have a degree and background in English Education and experience teaching poetry. I am excited to celebrate the thoughts, ideas and growth of each student in their appreciation of the poetry of others as well as in the discovery of their own voices through this form.

Description: Odyssey of the Mind is a STEAM creative problem solving program that helps foster skills such as teamwork, problem solving, self-confidence and more. The skits the children write, create costumes for, and act in will be performed the last day of the Spring semester. This program is for kindergarten – college age kids so we will split students into the predefined age groups.

Description: Do you love playing games? Join me for a chance to engineer your own game! We will study (and play) various games that utilize game boards. Game boards are used in so many different ways! We will start with a blank board-game kit (included as part of class fee) and then we will come up with a theme, rules, game pieces and design for your new game. The aim is to end the semester playing our new games as a class.

At our home school we use a game schooling approach to learning whenever possible! We also play games as a family 4-5 times a week. Our game closet is bulging at the seams…However we don’t have a game problem, we have a storage problem! I love games and hope to share that in this class.

Description: This is an advanced robotics course for those that have taken one of my intro courses, or have had outside classes. I will also take beginner students that are 13 or older. The fee is reduced as there is a planned cancelled class in April. I will provide activities related to robotics for a substitute for that day, but they will be unable to work on the robots.

Description: Knights of the Round Table, Quest for the Holy Grail, Queen Guinevere, love stories, Merlin vs Morgana, tales of knights, bravery, battles, romance, chivalry, magic, medieval weaponry all immersed in the history of Britain & Europe highlighting literature, poetry, bravery AND more!

Stories of King Arthur and his knights span history from the early 10th century all the way to present day. We will explore the genesis of this powerful and enduring legend, the authors who wrote the 100’s of tales, sort fact from fiction while discussing the massive impact on history, storytelling, and modern culture these tales had and still have today.
